Blush

This shop does not use pink anywhere in its own design. Not in the header, not on a button, not on a badge. That is deliberate: "for women" is not a colour, and a pink interface on a premium store reads as a discount store for teenagers.

Blush is where pink belongs — in the product, chosen by the person buying it, rather than applied to the shop as an assumption about her.

What makes a pink wearable

Grey. A pink mixed straight from red and white is a sweet, and it is the pink every cheap case is. Blush has grey through it, which moves it from confectionery toward plaster, clay and the inside of a shell — colours that have been in rooms for centuries because they are easy to live with.

It is also mixed pale enough that a print on it still has somewhere to sit. Peony Hour is a full-scale bloom on blush, and it works because the ground is one step quieter than the flower rather than competing with it.

Which blush is not a blush

Two prints on this ground are doing something other than being pink. Agate is mineral — concentric bands from a sliced geode at the size the slice was cut — and the blush is geology rather than decoration. Terrazzo is a floor reduced to a phone, where the ground is cement and the chips are stone.

If the colour appeals and the association does not, those two are the way in.

Against titanium

Blush and polished metal is a pairing jewellers use constantly — rose gold is the same idea made literal. Against the natural frame it is the warmest thing on the phone; against the gold frame it is nearly tonal and the whole object reads as one colour.
