Does a solid case show scratches more?
A matte solid shows fine scuffing more than a busy print does, because there is no pattern to break it up. Ink and Plum are the most forgiving because they are dark; Oyster and Dune are the least, in the same way a pale bag is.
What is Clear, exactly?
A transparent shell that lets the titanium frame and the phone’s own colour show through, with the same moulded two-part construction and the same MagSafe alignment. It is a solid in the sense that it has no print on it.
Will a clear case yellow?
All clear polycarbonate yellows with UV eventually — anyone who says otherwise is selling something. How fast depends on how much sun it lives in. It is the trade you make for seeing the phone.
Which solid goes with the gold frame?
Dune and Oyster. Both are mixed warm, which is what stops a neutral going flat next to warm metal. Slate is matched to the natural frame rather than the gold one.
Solid cases for the iPhone Duo
A solid case is the hardest thing in a range to get right, because there is nothing to look at except the colour and the shape. Any mistake in either is the whole product.
These were mixed against the Duo’s polished titanium rather than against a paint chart. Slate is matched to the frame so the case reads as part of the phone. Oyster is pushed about two points warm, because pure white goes grey under office lighting and yellow in photographs. Fern has grey through it, which is what separates a painted door from a road sign.
The shape is the design
With no print, the only things the eye reads are the two halves, the hinge line, the raised camera bar and the radius at the corners. That is a surprisingly good composition, and it is the reason Ink exists: a dense matte black that absorbs rather than reflects, so nothing competes with the silhouette.
It is also the most honest case here. A folding phone is an unusual object and a solid case is the only one that lets it look like one.
Plum only works in daylight
Plum is mixed dark enough that indoors it reads as black. In daylight the purple arrives. That switch is the entire idea and it is why the pigment is mixed down rather than up — a bright purple has nowhere to go, and a colour that looks the same everywhere is not doing anything a black one could not.
