What a folding hinge actually tolerates

The hinge is the part everyone worries about and the part a case can least afford to touch.

People buying a folding phone worry about the hinge, and they are right to think about it — it is the one part of the object that is a mechanism rather than a solid. What they usually get wrong is which failure to worry about.

The failure people expect

The expectation is that a hinge wears out from being opened. Folding mechanisms are rated for very large cycle counts, and at thirty opens a day those counts run to many years. It is not the interesting risk.

The failure that actually happens

Grit.

A hinge has a gap. Anything that gets into the gap and does not come out sits between moving surfaces and abrades them every time the phone opens. Sand is the classic; fine grit from a pocket is more common; the crumbs at the bottom of a bag are the most common of all.

The related failure is the same problem applied to the display. A folding display has a crease region that flexes, and a hard particle trapped against it when the phone closes is pressed into the screen with the full closing force. That is how folding phones actually die, and it is not a hinge failure at all — the hinge just delivered the particle.

What a case can do about it

Less than people hope, and one specific thing well.

A case cannot seal the hinge. Sealing it would mean bridging it, which means stopping it closing. Any case that claims to protect the hinge itself is either describing something that does not close or describing nothing.

What a case can do is control what reaches the gap from the sides. A shell that runs cleanly along the inner edge of each panel, close to the hinge and never touching it, narrows the approach. It is not a seal and should not be sold as one. It is a smaller opening.

The second thing a case does is keep the two panels apart when closed. Most folding phones close with a small gap by design; a case with equal thickness on both halves preserves it, and a case with unequal thickness closes the gap on one side and opens it further on the other. The wider side is where things get in.

The habits that matter more than the case

Do not put it in a pocket with keys or coins. This is the whole list, if the list has one item.

Close it before it goes anywhere. An open folding phone in a bag is a large flat panel among objects, and the crease region is the least protected part of it.

Empty the bag occasionally. The grit at the bottom of a tote is the source of most of what ends up in a hinge.

Do not force a stiff hinge. Stiffness after a cold night is normal. Stiffness that arrives suddenly and does not go is a particle, and the fix is to look rather than to push.

Cleaning near the hinge

Compressed air from a can, held at an angle and at a distance, moving outward rather than into the gap. Short bursts.

Not a cotton bud, which sheds fibres exactly where fibres are the problem. Not a pin or a toothpick, for obvious reasons. Not liquid of any kind, which carries whatever it dissolves further in and then evaporates leaving it there.

If the case comes off easily, take it off first. Most of what accumulates accumulates at the edges of the shells rather than in the mechanism.

Temperature

Folding mechanisms are stiffer cold, and a display with a crease region is less compliant cold. That is ordinary material behaviour and not a fault.

The practical consequence is small and specific: do not force a phone open that has been in a cold car overnight, and do not close one hard on a hot day when something might be resting in the fold. Neither of these is a case question, and both are worth more than any case decision in terms of how long the phone lasts.

The related habit is not leaving a folding phone on a car dashboard in summer. Heat is harder on a folding display than on a rigid one, for the same reason: there is a layer whose job is to bend, and its ability to bend is temperature dependent.

What the case can be blamed for, fairly

Two things, and they are worth checking on any case you buy.

Shell edges that stand proud on the inside face. If the inner edge of either shell rises above the phone’s own surface, it becomes the first point of contact when the phone closes, and it is contacting the display rather than the frame. This is not subtle when it happens and it is visible by closing the phone and looking along the gap.

Unequal thickness. Covered above, and it shows the same way: close the phone and look at the gap at the hinge end against the gap at the open end. They should look the same.

Both take ten seconds and both are worth doing on the day a case arrives rather than in month six.

What we will and will not tell you

We will tell you that our shells stop short of the hinge on both sides and leave it fully unobstructed, because that is a structural fact about how the part is made and it is visible in the hinge macro on every product page.

We will not tell you how many microns of clearance there are, or quote an ingress rating, or claim a percentage reduction in anything. Those are measurements, none of them has been taken, and the gap between “we designed it to stop short” and “we tested it and here is the number” is exactly the gap this site does not paper over.
